There was pin drop silence in the simple but classy sitting room. Terkaa in his usual skin was restless. He stood up from the foreign leather chair close to the flower vase, like an embattled lion sulking over its wounds. Puffing out loud, he moved from one area of the house to the next.
“Mimi, I demand to know what is going on. I can’t, I can’t take this silent treatment anymore. For one whole week now you have been acting like a familiar stranger, talk to me. Ka nyi kwagh?”
“Nothing, I’m fine,” she said as she used her hand to wipe off tears she tried to conceal all the while.
“That’s what you keep saying every…,”
“That’s because you don’t listen, Tay” (She interjected). Do you ever think about how I feel?”
Terkaa obviously startled, walked towards the couch and sat next to Mimi. “But I’ve always been there for you; I provide you everything you need. Is it money? You have the Lexus car all to yourself. I even helped your brother to clear …,”
“Oh please! Come off your high horse,” she yelled. “You are just a control freak, you think...”
“Don’t talk to me in that manner” Terkaa said with a thunderous voice.
“Allow me to talk abeg, she persisted. “After all, you have been the one doing the talking all through the relationship.” You dictate to me where to go and where not to, the kind of friends I should keep, even the food I eat because you want me to be in shape for you. It’s all about you. I tried to make you see how deep am hurting but you were too power drunk to notice. Is this your idea of the man taking charge?”
“Alright am sorry dear, I promise you I will amend my ways henceforth.” He said.
“I have heard that song a thousand times, she said. “It’s more about changing for real than apologizing, you don’t want to understand that, Tay. “I’ve been so confused and uncomfortable in this. Gush! I feel like the specks have been washed off my eyes, I deserve to be happy.(A river of tears flooded her facial make up by this time) This is not working Tay, it’s best if we part before we end up damaged beyond repair.”
“No, no you don’t mean that Mimi, we could sort things out.” Terkaa said as he grabbed her hands.
Mimi shook her head sideways. She stood up, opened her purse, brought out the key to the Lexus and dropped it on the table. “Am sorry, I have to leave now”.
Terkaa followed her up as she advanced towards the exit door. “Don’t do this to me Mimi. Please, I need you.” He said with tears in his eyes.
Mimi shrugged his hands off and walked hastily out of the house.
Terkaa collapsed to the floor and whimpered uncontrollably. He knew a rare gem just left his life.
You still have the chance. Don’t be “a Terkaa”.
